Coloring the Trashy Junk Mail Journal

I recently made a fun junk journal out of junk mail that was destined for the trash. In this video you can see how I added some color to all those fun junky pages!


Here are some of the products I used:
White Gesso
Golden Heavy Body Acrylic Paint in raw sienna applied with an old gift card
Golden Heavy Body Acrylic Paint in primary magenta, diluted and brushed on as a wash
Homemade spray ink in some kind of blue 
Something sort of purple, may have been another homemade ink
Oil or wax pastels or crayons (I'm not exactly sure) from a kids art kit
Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits and an old rag

Cooking is all about the right tools.

I decided it was time to finish the recipe binder project that I started before we moved. The task was too daunting to finish at that time so I saved it until I knew I could devote 100% of my full attention to it. Yeah, I procrastinated. I love to collect recipes, it's just a shame that I don't cook. I've always thought I might cook more if my recipes were in order. Just like I'm convinced that I could be a gourmet chef if I had me a big Viking stove and a Sub-Zero fridge like this one. [via] Yeah, I'm pretty sure if I had that fridge I could crank out one darn fine grilled cheese sandwich. Alas, it is not meant to be. Silk Tie Dyed Eggs Part Deux

Last year was my first attempt at dying eggs with scraps of silk. You can read about it here . I was really happy with the results even though I used the silk ties I had on hand (which were the ones in my husband's closet) and they weren't very colorful. Since then I've been collecting brightly colored silk ties and scarves when I can find them for under $1 at the thrift stores. I've also been thinking about the technique and wondering if there were any ways to improve on it. I wondered if it was really necessary to wrap your silk wrapped egg in a scrap of white fabric before boiling it. This is done to help hold the silk tightly against the egg since the pattern will only transfer when there is snug, direct contact with the egg surface.
